Introduction to Functional Communication & Behaviour Skills Training in People with Intellectual or Developmental Disability
Course Description:
Part 1: Functional Communication Training to Decrease Challenging Behaviour
This workshop will introduce Functional Communication Training (FCT), an evidence-based approach to reducing challenging behaviour by teaching meaningful and socially significant communication skills. It is based on the premise that all behaviour is a form of communication. We will review the foundational teaching principles behind FCT and participants will learn the basics of how to select and teach appropriate replacement communication skills.
Part 2: Behaviour Skills Training
Behaviour Skills Training (BST) is an evidence based method of teaching new skills. Direct staff often help teach new skills to people they support. This workshop will provide an introduction of how to teach skills in a positive and evidence based way. Through the use of examples, discussions, and practice, staff will have an opportunity to increase their skills and confidence with
this method of teaching.
