Recognizing and Managing Countertransference Reactions in Direct Developmental Supports

Countertransference refers to the feelings that are aroused in the helper by the persons we support, feelings that have more to do with our own past relationships and experiences than with any feature of the present helping relationship.  This is a natural reaction that occurs in all relationships.  It is the skilled direct support professional that is able to recognize and manage countertransference reactions in the helping relationship.  This presentation aims to provide direct support professionals with the tools to do so.

PULL TOGETHER: A Current Snapshot of Risk Assessment & Relapse Prevention Strategies when Working with People with Intellectual Disabilities who Present with Sexually Offending Behaviour

Traditionally, persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) who present with sexually offending behaviour pose particular assessment and treatment challenges when compared to those without disabilities.  Both clinicians and direct support professionals have evolved in recent years to meet these needs resulting in the introduction of several valuable assessment/treatment resources.  This presentation aims to give the attendee a snapshot of the current resources that exist.  This presentation should be beneficial to both clinicians who assess risk variables and develop treatment recommendations and, to direct support professionals as they attempt to meet the daily support needs of persons with ID who present with sexually offending behaviour.

The Culture of Psychopharmacology and Developmental Disabilities

Many people with a developmental disability are on psychotropic medication or multiple medications.  Studies suggest that psychotropic use in the community setting is increasing and approaching 40 percent.  Many people on psychotropic medication have no coordinated treatment plan for monitoring efficacy, side effects, or ongoing need.  This workshop will identify challenges and look at creative problem-solving and planning approaches to improve safety and enhance evaluation ~ including the use of PRN medications.  Please bring NON-IDENTIFYING case examples for discussion.
